STRAIGHT FROM JAPAN

Map of Japan marking the two regions the matcha comes from: Nishio, in Aichi prefecture, and Kyushu Island.

what exactly is ceremonial matcha?

what are matcha drink mixes?

Ceremonial grade matcha is considered the highest quality, typically made using the tender, bright green leaves of the first harvest (AKA ichibancha). It’s then deveined, destemmed and meticulously stone ground for an ultra-fine & soft texture.

We exclusively mix natural or organic flavouring with high quality matcha to bring you ceremonial matcha drink mixes full of fun, fruity & trendy flavours—with zero artificial anything.

MATCHA FAQS

You’ve got Qs, we’ve got As

When did you start offering matcha?

Our love of matcha is nothing new. This traditional Japanese green tea powder has been whisking us off our feet since we first opened our doors in 2008. And our obsession is only fueled by all the hype.

Where do you source your matcha?

Thanks to our long-standing partnerships with matcha growers, we’re able to bring you rare, authentic ceremonial grade quality straight from small, family-owned gardens in the Nishio region & on Kyushu Island, Japan.

What kind of matcha do you have?

From pure, small-batch stone ground matcha to irresistibly fun, naturally flavoured drink mixes, we want to be your one-stop matcha shop. Always dropping new mixes, always tasting new grades from different regions and always sharing our tips, tricks and inspo—we make sure to have the very best, so you can feel and taste the difference.

What does a matcha grade mean?

Matcha is often given a grade based on factors like taste, aroma, colour and texture. These grades can indicate the best way to use it (ceremony, cooking, etc.), but they’re also associated with certain qualities—for example, barista grade matcha has a stronger flavour to help it stand out in a drink.

All of our matchas—traditional & drink mixes—are ceremonial grade. We love getting creative, and we always encourage matcha fans to try new ways of DIYing! So, we’ve borrowed terms from other grades (like “barista”) to signal which of our traditional matchas are best for your at-home creations—from lattes to TeaPops to baking.

What is the difference between Ceremonial, Grand Cru, Matsu, and Barista Matcha?

Ceremonial Matcha - The highest possible grade in our collection—an exceptionally pure, small-batch matcha that’s lovingly deveined and destemmed before being stone ground into super-smooth decadence.

Grand Cru Matcha - Our creamiest authentic, stone ground matcha that tastes naturally sweet & velvety. Perfect for whisk into rich, thick matcha (AKA koicha).

Matcha Matsu - Fresh & toasty with a touch of natural astringency, this matcha powder is delicious on its own for everyday sips. The perfect all-round introduction to matcha!

Barista Matcha - The newest of our traditional matchas, this one is the answer for any & all DIYs—though it’s much higher quality than what is often called “culinary grade”.

What are matcha drink mixes?

We use a base of premium, high quality ceremonial matcha and exclusively mix with natural or organic flavouring to bring you ceremonial matcha drink mixes full of fun, fruity & trendy flavours—with zero artificial anything.

How is matcha different than green tea?

Matcha, like all tea leaves, comes from the Camellia sinensis plant. It starts with shading tea plants 2-4 weeks before plucking, which increases the caffeine and L-theanine levels in the tea leaves. The leaves are then steamed, dried, deveined and carefully ground to a fine green powder.
